Coffee is a brewed beverage prepared from the roasted seeds of the *Coffea* plant. While its exact origins remain a subject of historical debate, culinary tradition frequently traces its roots to the Ethiopian highlands, specifically the Kaffa region, where legend suggests the plant's stimulating properties were first discovered. From East Africa, the beverage spread through the Arabian Peninsula, eventually evolving into a global cultural phenomenon.

The fundamental ingredients of coffee are roasted beans and water. The quality of the beverage is largely determined by the bean variety—most notably Arabica, prized for its nuanced acidity, or Robusta, known for its higher caffeine content and bolder profile. A superior cup is distinguished by the precision of its preparation, including the roast profile, grind consistency, water temperature, and the specific extraction method used, such as espresso, pour-over, or French press.

Regional variations highlight the drink's versatility. Italian coffee culture is centered around the concentrated, pressurized extraction of espresso. In contrast, Middle Eastern and Turkish traditions often involve boiling finely ground coffee, sometimes with spices, directly in water. In Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, coffee is frequently paired with sweetened condensed milk to balance its natural bitterness. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony remains a significant social ritual, emphasizing the traditional roasting and manual brewing of the beans.
