The story
# Pan con Tomate
Pan con tomate is a traditional Spanish dish consisting of toasted bread rubbed with fresh tomato and olive oil. Despite its simplicity, it represents a cornerstone of Spanish cuisine and Mediterranean food culture.
## Origin and History
Pan con tomate originated in Catalonia, Spain, emerging as a practical peasant dish that made use of stale bread and seasonal tomatoes. The dish gained prominence during the 20th century and has since become emblematic of Spanish culinary tradition, particularly in Catalonia and throughout the broader Mediterranean region.
## Key Ingredients and Preparation
The dish requires only a few essential components: rustic bread (typically pan de pueblo or similar country-style loaf), ripe tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and salt. The preparation method is straightforward: bread is toasted until golden, then rubbed vigorously with halved tomatoes so the flesh transfers onto the bread's surface. The bread is then drizzled generously with olive oil and seasoned with salt to taste. Some regional variations include garlic rubbed on the bread before the tomato.
## What Distinguishes Excellence
A superior pan con tomate depends on ingredient quality—particularly ripe, flavorful tomatoes and high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The bread should be sturdy enough to withstand rubbing without disintegrating, yet toasted to achieve optimal texture and flavor development.
## Regional Variations and Notable Venues
In Barcelona, establishments such as La Cova Fumada, Gresca, and Cpep serve exemplary versions of this classic dish, each bringing their own interpretation while respecting traditional preparation methods. Variations may include additions of jamón ibérico, cheese, or anchovies, though purists maintain the original simplicity.

Ces Rocas is a stunning seaside restaurant with a breathtaking view, serving outstanding seafood paella and grilled meats.
We only now noticed this place was in the Fifty Best from some years ago — I wouldn't go so far as to say it deserves a spot in the Fifty Best, but it doesn't even think about stopping the rain, in fact it increased.
C/Pep · BarcelonalovedA very rustic, simple place — don't expect fancy stuff, just home-style dishes. You spend little, we spent €36. If you want to breathe the authentic Barcelona atmosphere, this is the place in Barceloneta.
We started with a bang — this place is super recommended, we spent €90 including three glasses of wine and the animella was €26, overall it's worth it.
Gresca · BarcelonalovedA nice little spot with good tapas, though not sure if it deserves a spot in the 'fifty best' list.
Cpep · BarcelonalovedThe Gucci Garden aperitivo was a bit disappointing due to the service and the non-Tuscan snacks, but the price was surprisingly reasonable.
