Neapolitan Baked Pasta

A classic Sunday dish from Naples, rich and opulent with ragù, meatballs, mozzarella, provolone, hard-boiled eggs, and peas, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

- Ground MeatMinced meat for meatballs
- Parmigiano ReggianoFor meatballs and topping
- 1 pcsEggFor meatballs
- SaltTo taste
- PepperTo taste
- ParsleyChopped, for meatballs
- Frying OilFor frying meatballs
- RigatoniOr other short pasta
- Ragù NapoletanoNeapolitan meat sauce (see separate recipe)
- MozzarellaPreferably drained but slightly moist
- ProvoloneCut into small cubes
- Hard-Boiled EggsHard-boiled, sliced
- Pisellini PrimaveraFresh spring peas; if using older peas blanch first
- Butter(optional) — For greasing the dish
Method
- Soak bread in water to soften, then squeeze dry.
- In a bowl, combine minced meat, soaked bread, grated Parmesan, beaten egg, salt, pepper, and chopped parsley. Mix well and form small meatballs (about 10g each).
- Fry the meatballs in hot oil until golden brown; set aside.
- Boil rigatoni (or preferred pasta) in salted water for 5–6 minutes maximum (very al dente). Drain.
- Toss the drained pasta generously with the ragù napoletano (Neapolitan meat sauce).
- Butter a baking dish. Spread a layer of the seasoned pasta on the bottom.
- Layer with pieces of mozzarella, provolone, sliced hard-boiled eggs, meatballs, and fresh spring peas.
- Add another layer of pasta and repeat the filling, reserving some meatballs for the top.
- Cover the final layer with remaining provolone and a generous grating of Parmesan.
- Bake in a preheated static oven at 200°C (400°F) for 25–30 minutes, until a golden crust forms.
- Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
