A quick and easy summer appetizer: fresh fig slices pressed into a carpaccio, served with your choice of sweet or savory toppings.

Method

  1. Slice the figs into rounds slightly thicker than the edge of the plate.
  2. Arrange the fig slices on a plate, close together but not overlapping, as they will spread when pressed.
  3. Cover the figs tightly with plastic wrap, stretching it well.
  4. Press down firmly on the plastic wrap to flatten the figs into a carpaccio shape.
  5. Remove the plastic wrap carefully.
  6. Serve as is or add your choice of toppings: for a sweet-savory version, top with raspberries, toasted hazelnuts, fresh goat cheese, a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, salt, and black pepper; for a classic version, add salt, oil, pepper, prosciutto crudo, and honey.
