Cannonau Rosato

Cannonau Rosato is a rosé wine produced on the Italian island of Sardinia, made predominantly from the Cannonau grape—the local name for Grenache. The variety is believed to have been introduced during the Spanish dominion in the 14th century and has since become Sardinia’s most iconic red grape. For a rosato, the grapes undergo a brief maceration period—typically a few hours to a day—to extract a delicate pink hue and gentle tannins, after which the juice is fermented off the skins. Key ingredients are solely Cannonau grapes; no blending is permitted under DOC regulations for Cannonau di Sardegna Rosato. A great version distinguishes itself through a balance of fresh red-berry fruit (cherry, raspberry), subtle floral notes, and a crisp, dry finish with pronounced minerality, reflecting the island’s granite and limestone soils. Regional variations exist between coastal and inland Sardinian producers: coastal wines tend to be lighter and more saline, while inland examples from Oliena are fuller-bodied with more structure. One notable producer, Cantina Puddu in Oliena, has been cited by Gambero Rosso for its exemplary Cannonau Rosato, demonstrating the wine’s character through a vibrant, food-friendly profile.
