The story
Tucked away in Rome’s Piazza Bologna district, Smash Tag Burger is a tiny hole-in-the-wall devoted to the art of the smash. Creator Giuliacrossbow calls it “a local gem worth visiting,” praising the “great crust on the meat,” real ingredients, and homemade sauces. The compact menu leans hard on smash variations—Smash Pink, Smash Brown, Smash Chicken, and Smash Man’s—plus Nuggets di Pollo. It’s a stripped-back, takeout-friendly spot that prioritizes execution over frills.
With a solid 4.3-star rating, this casual American-style burger joint has earned its rep among neighborhood regulars. Giuliacrossbow’s endorsement underscores the appeal: excellent smash burgers that punch above their size. (Cucina con Ruben also found the meat excellent, though noted the Cube could use a touch of acidity.) For those navigating Rome’s endless pasta and pizza options, Smash Tag Burger offers a satisfying detour into handheld, crispy-edged comfort.

Smash Tag Burger’s “Cube” earns raves for its crispy, juicy perfection, while the overall vibe is pure, unfussy indulgence that keeps diners coming back.
“This is the Cube, with our homemade mayo, Smash sauce, sweet potato cubes, smash burger, vegan cheese, caramelized onion, and bacon. Very indulgent, flavorful, the cheese doesn't bother. If I had to find one thing, it lacks a touch of acidity, something refreshing because it's very strong, for strong palates. The sweet potato cubes inside give crunch, a great idea. I would add a drop of lime juice in the mayo. But the meat is really top-notch.”

Dishes mentioned
Switch Chili
This is the Switch Chili, with bacon mayo, lettuce, smash burger, vegan cheese, beef bacon, and a chili glaze. It's pleasant, compact, and aromatic. I would maybe leave out the lettuce because it's already strong on its own. The chili is good but you need to like spicy. The bacon mayo comes through nicely. Good overall.
Cube
This is the Cube, with our homemade mayo, Smash sauce, sweet potato cubes, smash burger, vegan cheese, caramelized onion, and bacon. But the meat is really top-notch.
Classic
This is our classic, with Smash sauce, lettuce, smash burger, pickles already in the sauce, bacon, and cheese. I might be biased because I love pickles, but this is my favorite so far. You can taste the meat, the mayo, all ingredients distinct. It's a good combination, really a good sandwich.

Smash Pink
This is the only burger I had already tried before filming, because my sister recommended the Smash Pink. Knowing my tastes, she knew I love the Christmas mayo sauce — that kind of mayo with forty thousand ingredients. I'll have to make it myself one day. It's very interesting. There's also a slice of something, I'll gladly accept it. The bun is soft, the meat is nicely crusty from the smash technique, and the bacon is thick and honest — you can tell it's made by them.
Smash Brown
This one has a BBQ sauce — you can really taste it. Usually BBQ sauce is very heavy, but this one is very delicate, maybe even too delicate. A little more body would be nice, but it's good. The meat has a nice crust, I like the bacon a lot — it's thick, honest bacon. You can tell the sauce is made by them, not the usual bottled BBQ. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ sauce — after a few fries I'm already sick of it — but this one works.
Smash Chicken
Recently I've re-evaluated chicken at fast food places — I can't eat McDonald's burgers anymore, all blended, with nail and mouse and everything. Despite the menu being quite limited in terms of different meats besides beef, this chicken burger is great. The chicken is real fillets, everything is homemade. It looks a bit ugly, like Five Guys burgers — ugly but good for the soul. That's what matters. It's about €6.80, which is fair. The only downside: they have more salt than the Dead Sea.
Smash Man's
I love peanut butter — not the BoJack Horseman character, he's a bit annoying. I went for the Smash Man's, the one with the soft bun, peanut butter, milk chocolate and hazelnuts. It's one of those burgers you try to swallow and probably choke because you need water, but let's try. I could taste the roasted peanuts — I felt the Kraft. I'm not a fan of sweets, I almost never order them because they bore me, but this one is particularly good. The peanuts are roasted, so hats off. The peanut butter on the base is great. The only thing: it's a bit dry. Maybe a scoop of fior di latte ice cream would have been amazing. For €3.80, it's a steal.
A Mocho! in Rome serves incredible American BBQ sandwiches — the pastrami is the best I've ever had, and the pork belly is melt-in-your-mouth tender.
Dishes mentioned
Pancia di Maiale
This pork belly is so tender it cuts like a grissino — like the Rio Mare ad from the 90s. It's incredibly soft and well-seasoned. I almost cried eating it.
Pastrami Sandwich
This pastrami sandwich is the real deal — it's puffy, really puffy. Beautiful bread, beautiful pickle. Look how it shines, it's glossy. The pastrami is the best we've ever eaten. I'm stunned. I challenge everyone: take the train, the plane, the car, whatever, come here, eat this, and then tell me publicly if I'm wrong — this is probably the best thing you've ever eaten in all your travels.
