The story
Palermo’s Mercato di Ballarò delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a historic Sicilian street market: a loud, chaotic swirl of stalls, fresh seafood, and serious energy. Jack’s Dining Room called it “lively” with great vibes, while Manu Food praised the colorful alleyways and vibrant atmosphere. The eating experience, however, can be uneven. Octopus and eggplant parmesan were clear highlights; the Squid Stuffed with Bread and Tomatoes, by contrast, was chewy and didn’t land. As Jack noted, “Overall it wasn’t the best food I’ve ever had.”
For anyone drawn to a walk-in-friendly, boisterous scene and raw authenticity, Ballarò remains a must-visit landmark. Just manage expectations on consistency—the atmosphere often outweighs the plates. Order the octopus, skip the squid, and soak in the chaos.

The Ballarò market in Palermo is a lively, chaotic street market with great vibes and fresh seafood, but the food quality was mixed — the octopus and eggplant parmesan were highlights while the squid was chewy and overall it wasn't the best food I've ever had.
Dishes mentioned
Squid Stuffed with Bread and Tomatoes
This is fresh squid stuffed with bread and some other things, with a tomato salad and some squid tentacles with lemon. It doesn't really look great but it's delicious. The squid is kind of chewy though.
Sardine Meatballs
This is something very authentic to Sicily — sardine meatballs with some other fish in it, which sounds a little scary. The onions in it are really good. It's not bad, actually more my thing. I think sardine meatballs are kind of slept on a little bit.
Eggplant Parmesan
This eggplant parmesan was absolutely delicious. I love eggplant. Everything else here overall was pretty mid besides this — it was the standout.
Wrapped Sardine Stuffed with Something
We got a wrapped sardine here stuffed with something, I'm not sure. I actually do like sardines but I don't love the stuffing in there. I just prefer sardines on toast.
Octopus
This guy just pulled out the whole octopus and chopped it up with olive oil, parsley and lemon on top. Very tender, very very tender. I wish we brought the red sauce. This is the best — wise and vibe wise I'm rocking with this. $20 for a whole octopus is a good deal.
