The story

At a fish trattoria steps from the Atlantic in Aveiro, Mare Cheia delivers the kind of no-fuss seafood meal that lingers. Sentieri Golosi, an Italian food channel, stopped by during an Azores journey and came away impressed by a simple, stellar lineup. The grilled scorpion fish, they noted, came with a “killer onion sauce” that anchored the plate.

Their meal also included excellent fresh cheese and a mature São Jorge cheese, plus a verdinho verde to wash it all down. The entire spread came to just €79.80—a strong value for the quality. With a 4.6-star rating and a locally sourced, casual vibe, Mare Cheia is a confident, unpretentious stop for anyone craving honest Portuguese coastal cooking.

    Loved

A fish trattoria by the sea where we had excellent fresh cheese, mature Sao Jorge cheese, grilled scorpion fish with killer onion sauce, and great vinho verde — all for 79.80 euros.

    Dishes mentioned

    • Formaggio Fresco con Salsa Piccante Locale

We took fresh cheese which comes with local spicy sauce. This one is tastier, I don't know why because there's a little more salt. I like this one a lot. Without sauce it's better for me.

    • Formaggio Stagionato di Sao Jorge

The mature cheese from Sao Jorge is good because it's a little spicy. A very good piece.

    • Pesce Scorpione Rosso alla Griglia

This evening we have another variety of scorpion fish, a little redder on the grill, with the usual potatoes, two types of sweet potatoes — orange and greenish — and this wonderful sauce with a quintal of raw onion. Simple, fresh fish, nice and fat. When it's good it's good. I'll try it with this killer sauce, it's the sauce of love. The oil inside isn't that great but overall it's good because the onion has a little bit of vinegar. Delicious, perfect combination.

    • Patata Dolce Giallo-Verdina

The yellowish green sweet potato beats the orange sweet potato four to zero. This one is 100 times better, super aromatic. It tastes like yellow pumpkin at the end.

    • Vinho Verde

Tonight we return to vinho verde. I really like this wine, this green wine.
