The story

Since 1965, Ainoya has been a cornerstone of Osaka’s okonomiyaki scene, now run by the fourth generation of the same family. The tiny Namba spot is beloved by both locals and travelers for its unfussy, welcoming atmosphere and the sizzling theater of cooking batter on a hot griddle right at your table.

Mark Wiens called it “some of the best okonomiyaki I’ve had,” praising the fun, interactive experience. Beyond the signature okonomiyaki, the menu offers yakisoba and negiyaki—each executed with the same deft, no-frills precision that keeps this decades-old institution packed.

AI summary of what 3 dish mentions say about the food

Reviewers rave that Ainoya’s negiyaki is a savory, green-onion-packed revelation. The overall vibe is one of humble, masterful comfort food executed with soul.

This green onion pancake is a totally different structure — more like a two-faced omelette. The top is like an omelette, the center is filled with green onions and meat (I think beef), and the bottom is more of a batter. The freshness of the green onions is delicious. Very tasty.

    Loved

A legendary okonomiyaki restaurant since 1965, now fourth-generation family-run — very popular with both Japanese and tourists, with a fun griddle-cooking experience and some of the best okonomiyaki I've had.

    Dishes mentioned

    • Okonomiyaki

This is better than most okonomiyaki I've tried because of the way the cabbage — there's so much cabbage within the batter making it light and fluffy, and it still has that crisp texture of the cabbage so it feels quite light rather than batter-heavy and floury. The sweet and sour sauce, the creaminess of the mayonnaise, the smoky flavor of the bacon and minced meat, and little shrimp or octopus pieces — it's all caramelized and sticky on top. The bonito flakes wave from the heat. Definitely one of the best okonomiyakis I've had.

    • Yakisoba

The fried noodles come with all the seasonings already in there, plus an egg and bonito flakes on top. There's pork, octopus, and lots of cabbage at the bottom. You mix it on the hot plate yourself — you really taste the sweet and sour okonomiyaki sauce. It's good.

    • Negiyaki

This green onion pancake is a totally different structure — more like a two-faced omelette. The top is like an omelette, the center is filled with green onions and meat (I think beef), and the bottom is more of a batter. The freshness of the green onions is delicious. Very tasty.
