A classic French toasted sandwich made with ham, Gruyère cheese, and béchamel sauce, baked until golden and crispy on the outside, with a gooey, cheesy interior.

Method
- Make the béchamel: heat milk with salt and grated nutmeg in a saucepan. In another pan, melt butter over low heat, add sifted flour, and stir to form a roux. Pour in the hot milk while whisking continuously until the sauce thickens. Let cool, covering with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin.
- Assemble the croque monsieur: spread a little butter on slices of sandwich bread. Place two tablespoons of béchamel on each slice, then add cooked ham and cover with grated Gruyère cheese. Top with another slice of bread.
- Spread the top with béchamel and generously cover with additional grated Gruyère.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 200–215°C (400–425°F) for about 10–12 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
