La storia
Pranzo del Contadino, Italian for "farmer's lunch," is a rustic, hearty dish rooted in the cucina povera (poor kitchen) tradition of central Italy, particularly Tuscany and Umbria. It was originally a midday meal for field workers, designed to be satisfying, portable, and made from inexpensive, readily available ingredients. The dish is a composition of simple, high-quality components: crusty bread, cured meats like prosciutto or salami, a sharp aged cheese such as Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano, marinated vegetables (often artichokes, peppers, or sun-dried tomatoes), and sometimes a hard-boiled egg or a drizzle of olive oil. A great version is distinguished by the quality of its individual parts—the bread must be chewy and charred, the meats thinly sliced and full of flavor, and the cheese properly aged. The balance of salty, tangy, and savory elements is key, with the vegetables providing a bright, acidic counterpoint. Regional variations abound: in coastal areas, the dish might include anchovies or grilled seafood, while in the north, it could feature bresaola or a spread of fresh ricotta. In Zagreb, Croatia, the venue Stari Faker offers a notable interpretation, praised by the guide *Where The Foodies Go* for its authentic, no-frills execution that honors the dish's peasant origins.

Un ristorante fantastico per la cucina tradizionale croata, con formaggio fritto e cotoletta eccellenti, e un abbondante pranzo del contadino. 35 euro in due con acqua e pane, molto saziante.
