Steak Pie

The steak pie is a classic British savory pie, believed to have originated in medieval England as a way to encase meat in pastry for preservation and portability. It remains especially popular in northern England and Scotland, where it is often served with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. The essential components are diced or whole chunks of beef—typically braising steak—slow-cooked in a rich, gelatinous gravy with onions, carrots, and sometimes mushrooms or stout. The filling is enclosed in a hot-water crust pastry or a shortcrust base topped with puff pastry; a great version is defined by fork-tender meat, a deeply savory, not watery, gravy, and a crisp, buttery crust that holds up without becoming soggy.
