Key ingredients include thinly sliced beef—often flank or brisket—fresh ginger, lime juice, fish sauce (or light soy sauce), chili, and herbs such as cilantro or mint. What distinguishes a great version is the precision of the dressing: it must be tart, salty, and subtly sweet, while the ginger should provide a clean bite without overwhelming the beef. The meat itself should be cooked just enough to remain tender, either poached, grilled, or occasionally served raw if the beef is of sushi-grade quality. Crunch from julienned vegetables or toasted peanuts often adds texture.

Vietnamese *bò tái chanh* relies on lime-cured raw beef, whereas Burmese versions might add fried garlic and roasted rice powder.
